‘Guardians of the Galaxy’s Awesome Mix Vol. 2 Finally Has a Full Tracklist

I put on Guardians of the Galaxy on my Blu-ray player this morning, and have the movie going in the background while I work. I’m not paying too much attention, but every couple of minutes another great song comes on the soundtrack that sets my toe tapping. That would be the now-famous “Awesome Mix Vol. 1,” the cassette tape bequeathed to Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord by his dying mom. The keepsake, collecting some of the finest pop songs of the late ’70s and early ’80s, formed the spine of Guardians’ soundtrack, and even became a crucial plot point. And at the end of the film, Peter finds “Awesome Mix Vol. 2,” setting up the sequel, coming to theaters next month.

The Best Movie Trailers of 2016

December is officially upon us, and so is year-end list-making season. We’re kicking things off by looking backwards and forwards: By ranking the finest teasers, trailers, and coming attractions of 2016. To qualify, only the trailer had to be released in this calendar year; you’ll see trailers below for movies that haven’t even been released yet and can’t be judged next to the films they represent. That’s as it should be; beyond their function as pieces of advertising, trailers should stand alone, as bite-sized entertainments and even, in a few rare occasions, as works of art. Here are the ten trailers of 2016 (plus a few honorable mentions) that came closest to that lofty ideal.

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a beloved ’90s classic. But did you know the movie started life over ten years earlier, when producer Tim Burton wrote a poem in 1982? At the time, Burton was an animator at Walt Disney Studios, and he tried to turn The Nightmare Before Christmas into a short film. Disney considered it, but nothing ever happened with it, and eventually Burton lost his job. Then he went on to direct Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Batman. Suddenly, Disney was more interested in The Nightmare Before Christmas, and as an entire feature-length film. That’s just one of the Nightmare Before Christmas facts featured in the newest episode of You Think You Know Movies!

‘Star Trek Beyond’ Shows Why We Need Star Trek Now More Than Ever

It’s been a while since the crew of the Starship Enterprise visited a strange new world in search of new life and civilizations. The Star Trek of television was full of strange new worlds; the Enterprise seemed to discover one every single week. The Trek movies, so focused on special effects, violence, and intricate revenge plots, have frequently strayed from Trek’s original mission. And while there’s plenty of action and excitement in Star Trek Beyond, there’s also a clear attempt to return this series to its core principles: Exploration, diplomacy, teamwork, and the hope for a better tomorrow. After the missteps of the punishingly bleak and the unfortunately rehashy Star Trek Into Darkness, it’s a necessary and welcome course correction; a Star Trek back into the light.

‘The Wolverine 3’ Has a Surprising Rumored Title

Although The Wolverine 3 (or is it The Wolverine 2? There was only one The Wolverine, but it was the second Wolverine movie, god these titles are confusing), doesn’t have an officially announced title yet, most folks seem to expect the movie will be called some variation of Old Man Logan. Because, well, Hugh Jackman is getting old. All right, not that old. (He’s 47.) But supposedly this is grand farewell to the character that made him an international superstar. Old Man Logan (the name of a mini-series about a senior Wolverine living in a post-apocalyptic society) would make a fitting coda for his 17 years as the character.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2’ Trailer: Out of the Shadows, Into the Shadows of a Movie Theater

I like that this video explains who the Ninja Turtles are, for the benefit of those people who have been living in a cave (or maybe a sewer) since the late 1980s and have somehow avoided one of the six previous movies, five television shows, hundreds of toys, comics, and video games about these characters. “Oh Donatello is the purple one, ohhhhhh. For the last 30 years, I thought that was Raphael! My bad.”

What Marvel Got Right About Spider-Man That His Solo Movies Got Wrong

Oh what a different 18 months makes. A year ago, last fall Spider-Man fans were facing an entire universe of Spidey movies they didn’t particularly want; a third Amazing Spider-Man about the continuing and not-particularly-exciting adventures of Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, plus spinoff movies for Venom and the Sinister Six. Things got so bad for Spider-Man that when rumors began circulating that Sony was considering an Aunt May movie, Sony had to publicly dismiss those rumors as “silly” with “no validity whatsoever” because people thought that the company that made Amazing Spider-Man 2 might actually be dumb enough to make an Aunt May movie.
