The Gopher men’s basketball team hosts 6th ranked Michigan State at 7:30 tonight, pregame on AM 1390-the Fan at 7:00.  Minnesota is 5-9 in the Big Ten and needing a win while Michigan State is 11-3 in the Big Ten and in contention for a #1 seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament.  The Gophers are barely on the bubble for a NCAA tournament berth with a 17-10 overall record.

Yes, it’s sad when someone we love passes away; but, who says you still can’t have some fun.

Thankfully I have never had to write an obituary, but one would think it would be pretty basic. Person lived here worked here, talk about the surviving family members, where the funeral and wake will be. Nothing too exciting! It’s for someone’s death, right?

Back on February 11th a 94-year-old woman passed away and one of her three kids wrote the obituary. Well just because you are an adult now doesn’t mean you  can’t take punches at your sibling. A.J. wrote his mother’s obituary and decided to have a little fun trashing his siblings.

“She is survived by her son, A.J., who loved and cared for her; her daughter, Ninfa, who betrayed her trust; and son Peter, who broke her heart.”

The world is filled with terrible news, so it’s nice for us to find a story with a happy ending once in awhile.  Not that type of happy ending. Pervert. Here is an amazing story about a Swedish man who was stranded in a snow drift for 61 days.

Snowmobilers came across the car thinking it was wreckage. They peeked inside to find someone wrapped in a sleeping bag in the back seat.  Rescuers dug the 45-year-old man out of the car, and he was so weak he could hardly speak–yet alone explain what happened.  He said he’s been in the car since December 19th. Probably hiding out so he didn’t have to buy his family Christmas gifts. The man survived by eating snow and icicles.

Humans can last up to four weeks without food, so its plausible that the man was stranded for as long as he said he was.  His body temperature was around 31 degrees Celsius when he was brought into the hospital.  With his body temperature so low, he wasn’t using much energy.  This also helped him to survive. Like bears, humans can also go into a dormant-like state (especially during football season).

St. Cloud Vice President Scott Schreiner says they received “1,200 suggestions for a team name”.  The Northwoods League season begins for St. Cloud on May 30.  The home opener for St. Cloud is June 2 against Mankato at 7:05.

Hard-rock powerhouse Rob Zombie will hit the road with thrash metal giants Megadeth for a co-headlining tour that kicks off in New Jersey this May and features two previously announced festival appearances.

Rob Zombie and Megadeth are joining forces for the first time ever for the limited engagement this spring. The dates will come on the heels of Megadeth’s current Gigantour — which also features Motorhead, Lacuna Coil, and Volbeat — and will mark Rob Zombie’s first tour since last summer’s ‘Hell on Earth’ tour with another thrash metal titan, Slayer.

Rob Zombie stage show, described in the press release as “an amped-up, non-stop barrage of sin, sex and Satan guaranteed to rip your face off,” may clash with Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine‘s Christian beliefs, but nonetheless it should be a headbanging extravaganza! The engagement currently has nine announced dates — two of which are their previously set festival performances at Rock on the Range and Rocklahoma — with more to be announced soon.

Megadeth are touring in support of their 13th studio album ‘TH1RT3EN,’ while Zombie is currently working on his witchcraft horror flick ‘Lords of Salem’ — which has a tentative 2012 release date — and plans to enter the studio to record the follow-up to 2010′s ‘Hellbilly Deluxe 2.’

Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl‘s acceptance speech at last Sunday’s Grammy Awards stirred up a lot of reaction — both positive and negative — when he seemed to deride electronic music in favor of using real instruments. However, in a new open letter, Grohl clarifies his speech by saying he is a fan of electronic music and that his words were misinterpreted.

To get the explanation straight from Grohl himself, read his full statement below:

Oh, what a night we had last Sunday at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards. The glitz! The Glamour! SEACREST! Where do I begin?? Chillin’ with Lil’ Wayne…meeting Cyndi Lauper’s adorable mother…the complimentary blinking Coldplay bracelet…..much too much to recap. It’s really is still a bit of a blur. But, if there’s one thing that I remember VERY clearly, it was accepting the Grammy for Best Rock Performance…and then saying this:

“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do… It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].”

Not the Gettysburg Address, but hey……I’m a drummer, remember?

Well, me and my big mouth. Never has a 33 second acceptance rant evoked such caps-lock postboard rage as my lil’ ode to analog recording has. OK….maybe Kanye has me on this one, but….Imma let you finish….just wanted to clarify something…

I love music. I love ALL kinds of music. From Kyuss to Kraftwerk, Pinetop Perkins to Prodigy, Dead Kennedys to Deadmau5…..I love music. Electronic or acoustic, it doesn’t matter to me. The simple act of creating music is a beautiful gift that ALL human beings are blessed with. And the diversity of one musician’s personality to the next is what makes music so exciting and…..human.

That’s exactly what I was referring to. The “human element”. That thing that happens when a song speeds up slightly, or a vocal goes a little sharp. That thing that makes people sound like PEOPLE. Somewhere along the line those things became “bad” things, and with the great advances in digital recording technology over the years they became easily “fixed”. The end result? I my humble opinion…..a lot of music that sounds perfect, but lacks personality. The one thing that makes music so exciting in the first place.

And, unfortunately,  some of these great advances have taken the focus off of the actual craft of performance. Look, I am not Yngwie Malmsteen. I am not John Bonham. Hell…I’m not even Josh Groban, for that matter. But I try really fucking hard so that I don’t have to rely on anything but my hands and my heart to play a song. I do the best that I possibly can within my limitations, and accept that it sounds like me. Because that’s what I think is most important. It should be real, right? Everybody wants something real.

I don’t know how to do what Skrillex does (though I fucking love it) but I do know that the reason he is so loved is because he sounds like Skrillex, and that’s badass. We have a different process and a different set of tools, but the “craft” is equally as important, I’m sure. I mean…..if it were that easy, anyone could do it, right? (See what I did there?)

So, don’t give me two Crown Royals and then ask me to make a speech at your wedding, because I might just bust into the advantages of recording to 2 inch tape.

Now, I think I have to go scream at some kids to get off my lawn.

The Vikings have a struck a tentative agreement with the University of Minnesota on how much the Vikings would pay for use of TCF Bank Stadium while the Vikings Stadium is built near the Metrodome.  The Vikings didn’t say much much they would pay per game but did say TCF Bank Stadium would add 3,000 temporary end zone seats to the University’s 50,000 seat stadium.

The Vikings paid one game at TCF Bank Stadium in 2010 when the Metrodome roof collapsed and paid the University $1.7 Million for that one game.

Stolichnaya announced the “elit Pristine Waters Series Himalayan Edition,” which uses water collected from the freezing cold majesty of the Himalayas.

The water comes from a special reservoir located 10,000 miles above sea level in Nepal. Stolichnaya claims the mountain range serves as the perfect filter for vodka water since the melted snow runs through several layers of rock making it “some of the most unspoiled in the world.” I’m sure that calling a vodka “extra virgin” would be a little too misleading.

If that’s not impressive enough, the price tag is certainly eye-popping. Each bottle of the special vodka costs a whopping $3,000 and comes with a handmade oak case and a special golden ice pick. We imagine it’s the kind of vodka that God would have in his martini.

The Twins began spring training workouts in Fort Myers, Florida with pitchers and catchers on Sunday.  Pitchers and catchers needed to report on Saturday and began workouts on Sunday.  Carl Pavano will be the opening day starter on the mound for the Twins.  The other starting spots in the rotation will almost certainly go to Francisco Liriano, Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn and Jason Marquis.

The Twins added Marquis in free agency.  Other starting pitching options are Anthony Swarzak, Brian Duensing and Liam Hendriks.  The Twins full squad needs to report by Thursday with the first workout scheduled for Friday.

This was the game the Wild NEEDED to win, and they did.  Not only was this a huge victory and confidence boost for the Wild, it was also part of National Hockey Day and it was against last year’s Stanley Cup winners the Boston Bruins.

Right out the gate the Wild looked hot.  They had a certain flare and attitude going into this game and showed they can contend against the Eastern Conference.

It was a close game and was knotted 0-0 through the first period.  As you would expect with the Bruins it was physical.  The Wild stepped up and showed they can be physical too.  In the second period the Wild put two on the board, one by rookie Chad Rau and the other by Minnesota boy and NHL veteran Matt Cullen.  The game stayed 2-0 Wild going into the third.  The Bruins added the heat in the third but just couldn’t penetrate Backstrom in net for the Wild.  He stopped all 49 shots, which happens to be a record for his, and shut out the former champs 2-0.

The Wild are still on the outside looking in on the playoff race,  sitting just 4 points behind the eighth and final playoff spot with 61 points.
